HSK Examination Preparation
The newly updated Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a standardized test of Standard Mandarin Chinese Proficiency, which focuses on the language application ability of non-native speakers in daily communication, study and work. The new HSK consists two independent tests: the written test and the test. The written test includes 6 levels from HSK-level 1 to HSK-level 6; the oral test, which will be carried out by recording, includes 3 levels from HSK elementary, HSK Intermediate, and HSK Advanced level.
The connection between the HSK written tests and International Mandarin Chinese standard, A Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF), can be seen as the table below.
Written tests:
HSK (Level-1) Test takers can understand and use some simple Chinese vocabulary and sentences to meet basic communication requirements, and are qualified for further study.
HSK (Level-2) Test takers can carry on simple and direct communication in Mandarin on daily topics; Language ability can be graded as excellent in the elementary level.
HSK (Level-3) Test takers can accomplish basic communication tasks in Mandarin in daily life, study and work. When traveling in China, they can handle most communication tasks.
HSK (Level-4) Test takers can discuss a wider range of topics, and can communicate with native speakers in Mandarin much more fluently.
HSK (Level-5) Test takers can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, watch Chinese movies,and TV programs as well as give speeches in Mandarin Chinese.
HSK (Level-6) Test takers can easily understand what they have read and heard and express themselves both in speaking and writing fluently.

BCT Show |
Business Chinese Test (BCT)—Business Chinese Test is a national standardized test for non-native speakers in a business environment. BCT is composed of two independent tests: BCT (listening and reading) and BCT (speaking and writing). Test takers can take either of the tests or both.
Levels:
Level 1: Not qualified for the language ability in business Mandarin communication.
Level 2: Can carry on basic communication in business environment
Level 3: Can handle business communication in a Mandarin efficiently.
Level 4: Can handle business communication in Mandarin skillfully.
Level 5: Can handle business communication in Mandarin accurately and properly. |
YCT Show |
Younger learner Chinese test (YCT)—the new YCT is an international standardized Mandarin language capacity test, which focuses on the younger learners’ language application ability in daily life and study. The new YCT is composed of two independent tests, written test and oral test. The written test includes four levels, from YCT level 1 to YCT level 4. The oral test includes YCT elementary level and YCT intermediate level.
Levels:
YCT (Level-1) Test takers can understand the most commonly used Chinese vocabulary and sentences, and are qualified for further study.
YCT (Level-2) Test takers can understand and accomplish basic communication tasks using very simple vocabulary and sentences in Mandarin.
YCT (Level-3) Test takers can conduct simple and direct communication regarding the most common daily topics; language ability can be graded as excellent at the Elementary level.
YCT (Level-4) Test takers can accomplish basic communication tasks in Mandarin, and can handle most communication tasks when travelling in China. |
